CHAPTER 21

The Priest

The sauna smelled of cedar wood infused with the scent of birch. Priest poured water from the wooden ladle over the coals and the steam hissed as it rose and dissipated around the enclosed space. The door opened and a blast of cold air dropped the temperature five degrees in as many seconds. Priest smiled as Colin Dean stepped onto the pine duckboards and closed the door behind him.

“Mr James,” Priest greeted him with a firm handshake. His street name amused the Priest. He had thought of it himself, being a lifelong fan of the film ‘Rebel without a cause’. Colin Dean had to be Mr James, it made perfect sense. “I trust your men are making sure that we have some privacy.” He shifted his bloated body across the high bench seat to allow his guest to sit down. Sweat ran down his bald head in thick streams, dripping from his many chins onto his hairy chest. “There have been enough fuck ups this week.”

“Michael is on the door,” Dean answered meekly. “I’m sorry about our predicament but since Young was arrested, things have been a bit lackadaisical out there. We’ve got it in hand.” Colin Dean sat down next to his employer, his body a picture of fitness in comparison. Sweat formed on his washboard stomach immediately. The large muscles in his chest twitched as he lowered himself into a comfortable position.

“It’s not you that I’m concerned about,” Priest said, pouring more water onto the coal. “It’s the shit all over the television and newspapers which worries me. I don’t want our business affected by this nonsense. There are over two hundred uniformed officers and four hundred volunteers searching for the Barker girl.”

“I know,” Dean wiped sweat from his eyes. “I have told Hope to make the problem go away, pronto.”

“I don’t want to know the details, just make it happen.”

“She won’t be found, full stop.”

“Are you sure he’s suitable to replace Young?”

“Definitely not.”

“Tell me what your solution is,” Priest looked at Dean’s defined body and felt himself growing hard. He liked lean muscular men, although he was discreet about his sexual preference. His position was reliant upon fear and respect. The choices he made in the bedroom did nothing to bolster his authority. Many would see his homosexuality as a weakness. “I’m all ears.”

“I’m going to get rid of him and slot Kevin Warren into Young’s position,” Dean said without looking at his boss. He could feel his eyes on him and he shuffled uncomfortably. “Michael will supervise him for a few months to allow him to settle in. It will give us more control ultimately.”

“More control or more headaches?”

“The finer details are irrelevant,” Dean looked at his boss. “There will always be headaches at that level, that’s why we needed Young in the first place. Putting Kevin in will smooth things out. He’s strong minded and loyal.”

“Okay,” Priest nodded slowly. “What are his credentials?”

Dean knew that the Priest would ask him detailed questions about Kevin.
